When he was a child, K.J. Luke helped feed the ducks and tend his father's general store in the Big Island plantation town of Halawa. He was there one afternoon when a stranger came in, paid for his goods with a $5 bill, and left with more than $15 in change from the elder Luke. "You made a big mistake," K.J. said to his father. "No, no mistake," Luke Ngawk replied. "That man is new and I didn't know if he was trustworthy. For a small price, I found out he isn't."

The son never forgot. Fifteen dollars was no small sum for a Chinese immigrant who ran a store, drove a taxi, raised and slaughtered pigs and rented out extra space in the family compound for movies and dances.
