Bill Thayer can still remember receiving the phone call_from the state Department of Transportation's Harbors Division, informing him that he was successful in his request to lease the old container control tower at Pier 1, Honolulu. At the time, Waldron Steamship Co. Ltd. was being evicted from its space at the Pier 9 cruise-ship terminal, so that developers could make way for what is now Aloha Tower Marketplace.

"It was 1992, and we were just about to be evicted when they called me up and said the office was available and I jumped through the roof," says Thayer, president of Waldron Steamship.
