Johnson & Johnson, the major healthcare and consumer products group, has reported very strong first quarter results with net income up by 71.3 per cent to 418.0 million. Sales improved by 12.1 per cent to $3,149.0 million. For the previous year, first quarter earnings were $244 million and sales were 2.81 billion. Excluding one-time exceptional items in the first quarter of 1990, net profits were up by 12 per cent from $369 million with earnings per share at $1.11. inclusion of one-time items produced a 71.2 per cent increase in earnings per share for the first quarter to $1.25.
