Cosmetics International, April, 2002

After three years development, from 1 May, the Soil Association label can now be seen on a wide range of health and beauty care products under new standards established by the organisation.

Organic standards, says the association, have until now only been applied to a selected number of products -- like lip balms and bath oils. Now, following industry and consumer demands, it has drawn up criteria that can be applied to all types of beauty products like creams and shampoo.

Products should be minimally processed and GM ingredients are not allowed, with ingredients or processes that are toxic or have damaging effect on the environment are also to be avoided, according to the Soil Association.
