Surprise lift in US retail sales.(FINANCIAL NEWS)

Despite a castastrophic Christmas for many retailers, the US Commerce Department says US retail sales climbed 0.3% in January thanks to higher sales of clothing and new cars.
The surprise news lifted some US stocks, soothing worries about a consumer downturn--some analysts continue to think that the US can skirt a recession.
