Cosmetics International, March, 2008

Have some of the top personal care consumer goods companies secretly fixed the cost of their products? It's an allegation French antitrust agents want to get to the bottom of after targeting P&G, Reckitt Benckiser, Unilever and others, according to Le Figaro.

Henkel, Sara Lee and Unilever were recently fined 37m [euro] by the German Federal Cartel Office for secretly fixing prices on a range of household products, pushing prices up by as much as 5%.

If they are found guilty in France, the companies' fines could be even tougher: up to 10% of annual worldwide revenue.

Unilever, Reckitt Benckiser and PSG have all confirmed that they are the subject of a probe by French officials but weren't prepared to comment on the exact nature of the enquiry.
