Mellon unit banks on Internet services.

Mellon Financial Corp. has long been known as a powerful bank that's gained a loyal Fortune 500 following for its stolid cash management services. Now, the bank's cash management unit, Mellon Global Cash Management, is trying to recast itself in a hipper light as an Internet services provider.

So far, the Pittsburgh-based unit's gambit has worked.

Over the last several months, it has launched an array of Internet financial services, including:

* Mellon MerchantLinks, a service that allows businesses to process credit card transactions over the Internet.

* Mellon TradeLinks, an online bill presentment and payment service that also allows for the secure exchange of Web-based documents.
