Tony Uphoff seems to have a knack for choosing his jobs well. He caught the technology wave in the 1980s when he went to work for Ziff Davis. Then he joined CMP Media in the mid-1990s and rose to president of the company's business technology group. During the Internet craze, Uphoff moved to BeliefNet, which produces a Web site that focuses on spiritual issues. Again, he chose wisely, as BeliefNet turned a profit for several consecutive quarters.

After resigning from New York-based BeliefNet, Uphoff returned to his home state, California, where he joined Advanstar as VP-group publishing director of its technology group. He works out of the company's Santa Ana office.
