Traditional publishers are grabbing up online media companies in an effort to boost ad revenue and attract new advertisers. Some of the major deals so far this year:

January: Dow Jones & Co. acquires MarketWatch.com, a financial news site, for $528 million in cash.

February: New York Times Co. buys About.com, an online directory and content site, for $410 million in cash.

June: E.W. Scripps Co. announces plans to acquire Shopzilla.com, a comparison shopping search engine, for $525 million in cash.

June: Gannett Co. acquires PointRoll, a rich media company that develops "mouse-over'' and other online ad technology. Terms were undisclosed.
