Ascension Health, St. Louis, expects to save at least $43 million on medical-surgical supplies over the next five years, thanks to its new distribution contract with Medline Industries, Mundelein, Ill.

But that is only part of the story.

The distributor deal represents an initial phase of a supply chain overhaul that aims to save the integrated delivery network $64 million per year on supplies.

Heading that effort is Jonah Hughes, vice president of purchasing. His association with Ascension dates back to its birth in 1999 from the merger of Daughters of Charity National Health System, St. Louis, and the Sisters of St. Joseph Health System, Nazareth, Mich.
