Cell Robotics International, Albuquerque, N.M., this month will begin a clinical trial of its new laser infant heelstick device.
The "Infant Lasette" is a modification to the adult model already on the market, and is used to draw capillary blood from infants' heels.
The U.S. market for the devices is based on 4 million births a year, with each infant receiving a series of blood tests. The company estimated than premature infants receive up to five heelsticks a day.
The Lasette trial will begin in mid-September in a 380-bed hospital. As a needle-free capillary blood sampling system, the device is an alternative to lancets.
