Hospital Materials Management, June, 2003

Charleston Area Medical Center, Charleston, W.Va., 934 beds, joined MedAssets, Alpharetta, Ga., in a five-year contract that took effect May 1.

The medical center spends about $70 million on medical-surgical supplies for its three hospital sites.

The decision to join MedAssets for group purchasing followed a review of other GPO candidates, according to corporate director of materiel management Robert Boyles.

"Finding greater savings in our supply budget is critical to achieving our financial goals and we went through an exhaustive process to determine which GPO was the best fit for our organization" Boyles said.
