Mississippi Baptist Health Systems, Jackson, Miss., 624 beds, in January installed a CyberKnife stereotactic radiosurgery system for treatment of tumors.

The CyberKnife is made by Accuray, Sunnyvale, Calif. It allows precise doses of radiation therapy to the brain, spine, lung, pancreas and other areas, some previously considered inoperable.

It combines a linear accelerator mounted on a robotic arm with an image guide that tracks tumor location. The system acquires new images and transmits any position corrections to the robotic arm before delivering each dose.

The system monitors and tracks patient position continually during treatment. No major surgery is required.
