Nortel and partners to build fiber-optic network in Taiwan.

Nortel Networks Corp. will team up with two U.S. firms and Taiwan International Group to build a $20 billion Taiwanese fiber-optic network, as rising competition spurs demand for more bandwidth.

Nortel and two unidentified U.S. companies will take up to 35 percent of a venture to build the network, said Chang Pingjau, Taiwan International's chairman. Unitech Printed Circuit Board Corp., a listed unit of the closely held group, will take 15 percent, with the rest held by other Taiwanese companies.

Chang said the partners will provide initial capital of $6 billion (Taiwanese) to establish the venture by the end of this year. They plan to raise another $14 billion to complete the network late next year.
