Fiber-optic network gives Bechtel a call.

In the race to expand the nations' telecommunication infrastructure, Western Integrated Networks is spending $1 billion for its new broadband fiber-optic network that San Francisco-based Bechtel Corp. will build under a five-year turnkey contract. Bechtel will provide engineering, procurement and construction for five cities: Sacramento, Austin, Dallas, San Diego and San Antonio.

Western Integrated plans to later add seven more cities to its network.
