Underground Construction, October, 2003 by Coats, Sheila

A plastic pipe that has been around for 50 years may hold promise as the next generation for higher pressure gas distribution piping systems.

Atofina Chemicals Inc., along with the Gas Technology Institute (GTI), have been performing field trials on the Rilsan Polyamide-11 (PA11) plastic pipe, which is capable of handling pressures between 100 and 300 psig. Recent market surveys have shown there is a need for products like PA11 to replace aging high-pressure steel pipe.

In applications abroad, it has been demonstrated that PA11 offers most of the common benefits of plastic pipe, while extending the range of operating pressures due to its increased Hydrostatic Design Basis (HDB) rating.
