Milton R. Konvitz, longtime Chairman of the Editorial Board of Midstream, passed away on September 5, 2003, at the age of 95. He was associated with our magazine from its very beginning in 1955, and when he retired as chairman in 2001, he was honored with the title of chairman emeritus, which is still the way he is listed in this very issue.
How does one sum up a long and fruitful life such as his? One way is simply to cite the facts of his biography. He was born in 1908 to a rabbinical family in Tsfat (Safed), in the north of what was then called Palestine. He grew up in the United States and was educated in a Trenton, New Jersey, high school, subsequently at New York University where he earned both bachelor and law degrees.
