Asia Pacific Telecom, June, 2001

A broad proposal to establish a new telecommunications cable system between Singapore and Sydney has been announced by three companies joining forces, Telecom New Zealand, Singapore Telecommunications Ltd. (SingTel), and Cable & Wireless Optus. The proposal would mean that a submarine cable would link Singapore, Jakarta, and Perth.

"The Asian region is a large and rapidly expanding market for corporate and IP services," said Chris Hancock, managing director of data and business services at Cable & Wireless Optus. "All three companies have identified a growing need for robust infrastructure between Australia and Asia."
