Optus completes trial of a 900MHz network.(AUSTRALIA)

Australia's second-largest telecom firm, Optus, has completed a trial of a 900MHz mobile network in NSW by collaborating with China-based equipment provider Huawei. Although the third-generation (3G) mobile network of Optus uses 2100MHz frequency in cities, the company is planning to use UMTS900 equipment, as lower frequency is capable of providing a better range.

Henry Calvert, director of mobile products at Optus, said that Optus and Huawei had constructed and tested UMTS within the required timeframe. He also commended Huawei for prompt delivery of the equipment. According to a spokesman from Optus, they selected Huawei because the two companies worked together in the past. Optus will carry out additional trials of the UMTS900 network over the next few months...
