Korea Communications commission awards IPTV licenses to Hanaro, KT, and LG Dacom.(KOREA)
Asia Pacific Telecom, October, 2008
The Korean telecom regulator has granted licenses to three telecom players--Hanaro Telecom, KT, and LG Dacom--to provide television services through high-speed Internet connections.
The Korean Communications Commission announced that it has awarded Internet Protocol television (IPTV) concessions to these three firms, which need to launch commercial services by March 2009. The commission added that a Daum Communications-led consortium could not win the IPTV license due to financial inadequacy. KT is currently the biggest broadband Internet service operator in Korea, followed by Hanaro and LG Dacom. The three firms also provide landline services in the country.
