Lucent Technologies Supplies Optical Networking Systems for Shandong Telecom's Backbone Networks.(Brief Article)

Lucent Technologies announced that it has signed a US$8 million contract with China's Shandong Telecom -- a subsidiary of China Telecom, China's largest telecommunications service provider -- for Lucent's optical networking products. These products will greatly increase the capacity of the provincial networks of China's Shandong province and enable the company to offer new bandwidth-intensive data services to its customers.
Under the terms of the contract, Lucent will supply its WaveStar TDM l0G (STM-64/OC- 192) -- a synchronous digital hierarchy (SDH) system that uses a single laser to transmit 10 Gbps of information. That's the equivalent of transmitting approximately 2 million one-page e-mails per second.
