China Telecom to Cut Rates for Internet Telephony, Xinhua Says.(Xinhua News Agency)(Brief Article)(Statistical Data Included)

China Telecom will cut its rates for calls made over the Internet by as much as half, as part of the government's plan to reduce telecommunications fees, the Xinhua News Agency said.

China's largest fixed-line operator will charge RMB2.4 (US30 cents) a minute for calls to the US and Canada using Internet Protocol (IP) down from RMB4.8.

Calls to Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Macau will cost RMB1.5, and those to Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and Great Britain will be charged at RMB3.6.

Rates for long-distance IP calls to domestic regions will remain unchanged at RMB0.3. China Telecom's IP service will cover more than 200 countries.
