China Telecom, November, 2001

China Unicom signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Asia Global Crossing (AGC) for the landing of the East Asia Crossing (EAC) and Pacific Crossing undersea cables at Unicom Qingdao International Undersea Cable Landing Station. The MoU, which was approved by Chinese authorities, is the first independent international undersea cable landing station, wholly owned by China Unicom.

The deals of EAC and Pacific Crossing represent the beginning of the breakup of this monopoly, with China Unicom taking control of its own international undersea cable landing station.
