According to China Telecom, its next-generation transmission network will be developed in steps. Several major trunks will be built to link up optical nodes in important cities across the country on the basis of existing eight vertical and eight horizontal trunks. In the 10th Five-Year Plan period (2001-2005), DWDM-based optical transmission platforms will be built on the layer of the inter-province trunk network.

Large capacity self-healing rings with a speed of over 10 Gbps will be used in the near future while an all-optical network with OXC and OADM as network nodes will be built in the medium and long term. By the end of the 10th Five-Year Plan period, the length of the fiber optic cable toll transmission network will exceed 200,000 km including 100,000 km...
