UTStarcom signs $18.7 million new contract with China Netcom for Its IP-based PAS System in Hebei province. (Broadband and Optical Networks).(Brief Article)(Statistical Data Included)

UTStarcom Inc. announced that it has signed a contract valued at approximately $18.7 million to deploy its IP-based PAS city-wide wireless access system in a single city in China's Hebei province. Following the restructuring of China Telecom, China Netcom is now responsible for telecommunications development in ten northern provinces in China including the Hebei province.

Ying Wu, CEO of UTStarcom China said that based on statistics released by China Netcom, by the end of June 2002, the total number of PAS subscribers on China Netcom's networks increased 65% to 1.41 million from 854 thousand at the end of January. "PAS has now been deployed in nearly 268 cities in Mainland China, up from 237 at the end of the first quarter and 157 from a year ago," said Wu.
