China to challenge Intel with WLAN security standard--WAPI.(WIRELESS)(Brief article)

China has sought support from other nations to break Intel-led domination of the wireless broadband market by backing a homegrown Wired Authentication and Privacy Infrastructure (WAPI) against wireless local area networks (WLAN) technology, the state media reported.

The Wired Authentication and Privacy Infrastructure (WAPI) is a solution to the security loophole of the existing 802.11 standard of wireless local area networks (WLAN). In direct competition against 802.11i dominated by Intel, the WAPI technology developed by China is waiting for final voting to determine whether it is adopted as the international standard.
