Chinese to wait until 2008 for Internet telephony.(Brief article)

According to an AFP report, the government of China has banned free VoIP services to save the fixed-line business. The report quoted Chinese Internet portal group Tom Online's CEO, Wang Leilei, as saying that it is improbable that the Chinese government would not allow Internet telephony until 2008.

This move would severely affect Internet telephone companies like Skype. Skype in 2005 entered in to agreement with the Chinese carriers to offer its SkypeOut VoIP service in China. Hong Kong's richest businessperson and majority owner of Tom Online, Li Ka-shing, has played down the decision.
