China Netcom plans to launch a broadband arm.(China Netcom Corp. plans to offer internet protocol television services)(Brief article)

China Telecom, July, 2006

China's leading telecom company, China Netcom, revealed its plan to set up a new subsidiary offering broadband services in the country. Analysts believe the creation of a new broadband arm show "signs" of the company's aim to become a full-service broadband and multimedia services provider. According to China Netcom, though it already has basic broadband services, the new subsidiary would focus on other high-speed Internet-related services, including IPTV.

The carrier said it is partnering with Internet firm Shanda to offer online entertainment content and bundled services for the new broadband business. China Netcom and Shanda are planning to make available over 200 retail outlets for users to experience high-speed entertainment products and related value-added services.
