China's telecom watchdogs have commenced a countrywide drive to remove illegal fees charged by the carriers. The Ministry of Information Industry (MII) has started a cleanup effort following the growing number of subscriber complaints. Regulators ordered the country's telecom operators, including China Mobile, China Telecom, and China Unicom, to do away with all illegal charges by November 2006. According to China Consumer Association, subscriber complaints increased by 13 percent in 2005; the complaints included fees charged for the services the users did not opt for or did not realize they were using.
