China Unicom begins the testing of the music service Xuan Qu.(WIRELESS)

China Unicom has initiated the testing of a music service that provides users with songs from 23 record firms. Telecom and music companies in China are increasingly trying to stop piracy by providing easy methods to buy music legally. Called Xuan Qu, the trial service allows users to download songs on their cell phones for 39-66 cents each.

China Unicom's general manager for value-added service, Tong Xiaoyu, said that under this service, consumers would not be able to transfer songs to other computers or cellphones, thereby protecting copyrights. Record firms providing music on this new service include Sony BMG Music Entertainment, EMI Group, Universal Music, and Warner Music Group.
