China Telecom likely to merge with China Unicom.(TOP NEWS)

According to a newspaper report, China Telecom is likely to merge with mobile firm China Unicom. The merger is likely to take place in the near future. Meanwhile, China Mobile is also likely to merge with China's second-largest landline operator, China Netcom, according to the Financial Times.
Reports suggest that China Telecom is willing to buy out or collaborate with a cellphone network. The company is interested in obtaining a license for providing 3G mobile services. A spokesman of China Telecom refused to comment on the report. The Chinese government is keen to improve the nation's telecom sector before the commencement of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
