Siemens and Pirelli to build a fiber optic network. (Germany).(Pirelli Cable Corp; Telekomunikasi Indonesia P.T.)(Brief Article)

European Telecom, January, 2002

Siemens AG said its telecom networks unit won a $62.95 million contract with Pirelli from Indonesia's PT Telkom to build a fiber optic network in Sumatra.

The companies teamed up in May 2001 to develop submarine transmission equipment, which they said was a first step in a project by Telkom to link the islands of Sumatra, Java and Kalimantan with a submarine and terrestrial fiber optic network. The contract puts them in a "good position to win these future telecommunication projects in the region," the companies said.

Siemens has long had links to PT Telkom, which it said has bought equipment from the German company over the last 10 years, including broadband technology.
