Mandelson and Reding disagree over 'roaming cuts'.(ACROSS THE REGION)(Brief article)

European Telecom, August, 2006

The UK's European commissioner for trade, Peter Mandelson, is apparently engaged in a tussle with the EU over cuts in roaming charges. Mandelson and vice-president of the European Commission, Gunter Verheugen, have raised their voices against the issue. They are opposing Viviane Reding, the EU telecom commissioner, reasoning that the regulation will harm the competitiveness of the operators. The proposal is to reduce roaming charges by 50 percent.

Mandelson and Verheugen have stated that they will get the support of their associates to reframe the proposal. A spokesman for Mandelson said that a debate is underway and the results of the discussions will be known next week. According to Reding's office, out of the 25 commissioners, only 2 had voiced opposition.
