Italy-based communications regulator Agcom and the EU Commission have agreed to end asymmetric termination rates between telecom service providers before the end of 2010. EU telecom commissioner Viviane Reding said that asymmetric termination rate was only a temporary mechanism for promoting competition.
Analysts suggest that ending of asymmetric termination rates could disappoint service providers like FastWeb. Currently, Italy-based operator FastWeb SpA, which has spent a lot of money on its own fixed network, is permitted to charge more money for the termination of calls on Telecom Italia's network than what Telecom Italia can charge on FastWeb's network.
