New entrants granted radio frequencies in four new telecom circles.(WIRELESS)

The Indian government has allocated initial GSM spectrum to new telecom entrants, including Unitech and Datacom, in around four circles of Maharastra, Mumbai, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh (East). Tata Teleservices, which recently got a GSM license under the government's dual-tech policy, has been allocated radio frequencies in the Mumbai circle.

This development would enable the new entrants to launch their services in 10 circles, since the spectrum has been allocated in six circles of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Orissa, Karnataka, and Madhya Pradesh. Only three firms could be accommodated in Punjab due the availability of just 15MHz of spectrum; these are CDMA operator HFCL and GSM firms Unitech and Idea Cellular.
