Industry: Email Alert RSS FeedMTN reportedly planning to buy stake in Aircel.(MERGERS AND ACQUISITIONS)
India Telecom, October, 2008
Media reports state that the MTN Group is holding discussions with India-based Aircel for a stake acquisition deal. The South Africa-based group is perhaps interested in Malaysian company Maxis's stake in the joint venture. The report added that the company, which had previously failed in its talks with India's top two private telecom operators--Bharti Airtel and Reliance Communications--is not eyeing stakes in BSNL, Vodafone, or Idea.
Furthermore, Tata Teleservices is apparently having talks with NTT DoCoMO, while Russia-based Sistema has already bought a majority stake in Shyam Telelink. Therefore, the only incumbent player left is be Aircel. The unconfirmed report also stated that MTN is keen to invest in a pan-India service provider.
