Variable speeds drives cut energy costs.

Alstom Power Conversion has appointed a team to investigate ways of minimising energy usage in order to help industrial consumers in the UK reduce the impact of a climate change levy in the UK which will increase energy costs by 12%. Alstom says that it has been estimated that as much as 65% of all energy consumed by industry is used in the control of electric motors. However, conventional pumps and fans are often run at full speed, although full speed is not always needed. Alstom notes that a 20% reduction in fan speed cuts energy consumption by 50%. Furthermore, Alstom claims that with 50% of all low-voltage electric motors over-rated by more than 25%, many companies are wasting money unnecessarily.
