Another advantage of cancelling the joint venture is that it simplifies KPM's corporate relationships. KPM has no smelting and refining capacity, nor any aspirations in that direction, but has a close working relationship with Impala Platinum Holdings Ltd, founded on mutual need. Impala has considerable spare capacity (built in anticipation of the merger with Lonrho Platinum blocked by the European Commission), with which it treats concentrate from Kroondal. The joint venture would have involved Anglo Platinum taking its share of concentrate to its own smelting facilities.
