Anglovaal Mining Ltd (Avmin) and Impala Platinum Holdings Ltd (Implats) have formed a joint venture to develop, manage and operate a new platinum group metals (PGM) mine in Mpumalanga Province, South Africa. The new mine will be based on PGM mineralisation contained within the Merensky and UG2 reefs on the Dwars Rivier farm, the rights for which the companies have jointly acquired from The Associated Manganese Mines of South Africa (Assmang), for R551 million. Assmang operates a recently-opened chromite mine at the property (MJ, October 27, 2000, p.339). The rights, together with the associated surface rights, were sold by Assmang in a competitive bidding process begun in September last year. Avmin has direct and indirect interests in Assmang totalling 58%.
