EC launches energy debate ...(European Commission)(Brief Article)(Statistical Data Included)

The European Commission (EC) last week distributed a comprehensive green paper on the future energy supply to the European Union entitled `Towards a European strategy for the security of energy supply'. The paper sets out the current status of energy supply in the EU, and the likely position in thirty years' time if current trends are maintained. The main purpose of the paper is to,help to open a debate on the subject(*), which it does by posing a number of questions.
Chief among these questions is whether or not the EU should adopt a common energy policy (this issue, p.414), which was omitted from the treaty that established the original European Economic Community.
