EC calls for withdrawal of aid for coal mines ...(European Commission)(Brief Article)

The European Commission (EC) has called for the closure of coal mines in the European Union that perform poorly economically despite being granted state aid, with a view to them being restructured and made profitable. In its latest report on state aid to the mining industry (for the year 2000), the EC has criticised aid paid by EU-member governments to the coal industry which, it claims, "is in crisis, despite several years of state aid." The EC adds: "The competitive imbalance has not been compensated; on the contrary, in many cases it has even been exacerbated. Increasingly, these measures serve as a support to vulnerable areas and social groups, while the prospect of a return to an economically viable European coal industry is fast disappearing."
