Glencore to restart Alcasa potlines.(Brief Article)

The state-controlled Corporacion Aluminios de Venezuela SA (CAV) has reached a US$16 million agreement with Swiss-based Glencore International AG regarding the reactivation of two potlines at CAV's Aleasa aluminium smelter. The 30-year-old potlines have been idle since late 1008, when they were closed down because they require upgrades to operate economically (MJ, December 18, 1008, p.486). Glencore's investment will be recouped by production from the restarted potlines.
A CAV statement noted that technical problems had caused the restart to be delayed from July 2, but no date has been set for the commencement of production. The restart will allow Aleasa to operate at its 210,000 t/y capacity, compared with current output of about 160,000 t. CAV further noted...
