Temporary suspension at Mont-Wright mine.(iron ore mine owned by Quebec Cartier Mining Co.)(Brief Article)

Mining Journal, July, 2001

Quebec Cartier Mining Co. is to suspend iron ore production from its Quebec operations for a three-week period from August 6, owing to high stockpile levels. Approximately 1,100 workers at the mine, located 700 km east of Quebec, will be affected. The rise in stockpiles is as a result of reduced demand from US steelmakers as the economic downturn continues in North America.

Quebec Cartier is a joint venture between Canadian steel producer Dofasco Inc. and Brazilian company Caemi. The suspension is the sixth such interruption in a two-year period. On April 30, 1,700 union employees returned to work at Mont-Wright after a month-long lock-out over the terms of a new four-year labour contract (MJ, May 4, p.340).
