Kaiser-BPA dispute resolved. (Production).(Kaiser Aluminum Corp., Bonneville Power Administration settle dispute over unused power)(Brief Article)

Mining Journal, October, 2001

Kaiser Aluminum Corp. has settled a dispute with the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) over penalties due for unused power at Kaiser's suspended smelters in Washington State, US. The new five-year contract allows Kaiser to avoid paying BPA a penalty if BPA incurs a loss in selling excess power contracted to Kaiser's Mead and Tacoma smelters. The two parties have been in negotiations for some months (MJ, July 6, p. 12).

Kaiser's smelters at Mead and Tacoma were temporarily closed last year when power prices rose owing to a shortage of hydroelectrically-generated electricity following a drought in the Pacific Northwest (MJ, December 15, 2000, p.467).
