As might be expected, in the holiday season, base metals markets have been subdued over the past week or so. On the days that the London Metal Exchange has been open, base metals prices, with the exception of nickel and lead, have moved lower. Nickel was boosted by an announcement from Norilsk Nickel of Russia that it has no plans to export nickel in January and may not export in February. The company said that in 2001, it exported 177,400 t of nickel and 422,000 t of copper. However, the company did say that it had originally planned to export 155,000 t of nickel in 2001, and had shipped more in order to compensate for reduced exports at the beginning of this year.
