How car makers choose OE tyres

What makes a car manufacturer choose a particular brand of original equipment tyre? Is it technical requirements only, or are other factors influential? Stuart Marshall asked Europe's major car manufacturers how they decide. * When cars were simpler, customer expectations lower and operating conditions easier, the cheapest suitable tyre usually won in the choice of OE tyres. Today the status of the OE tyre has never been higher. It is regarded as a component whose performance is crucial to the car's efficiency, safety and economy.
