Will a Conti-Pirelli merger help? (Continental AG and Pirelli S.p.A merger)

In the year since Pirelli SpA made public its merger proposal to Continental AG, about the only concrete actions to report have been falling profits and the displacement Of top executives on both sides.

Only since Conti chairman, Horst Urban, and Pirelli Tyre CEO, Ludovico Grandi, left, have the two sides been able to agree to meet. Anything more significant still seems a long way off.

Both sides report the first rounds of talks have been "friendly" and "productive," but does this mean progress has been made? Negotiations to date seem to have concerned the benefits of cooperation in North America. Neither side will say anything definite about the big picture, the European marketplace.
