The great gopher takeover: dirt mounds, hungry coyotes pose security challenge to Pangborn groundskeepers.(Pangborn Memorial Airport)

Wenatchee Business Journal, July, 2007 by Bentley, Ryan

Gophers are digging up trouble and violating Federal Aviation Administration safety regulations at Pangborn Memorial Airport.

The rodents' tunnels and the dirt mounds that come with them can bring the airport out of compliance with FAA's safety standards, said Christina Flohr, operations superintendent for the airport.

A mound of earth more than 3 inches tall, or an uneven surface in the safety zones along either side of the runway can put federal funding in jeopardy.

Gophers aren't the only animals breaking federal rules. Their presence attracts other animals, mainly raptors and coyotes that come to prey on the little varmims.

But it's not just the gophers that create trouble. Even a puddle can be a problem.
