The cost of mailing a first class letter using the U.S. Postal Service increased from 39 to 41 cents on May 14. But that is just part of a new rate structure that post office customers are dealing with.
Kurt Rehberg, customer service manager at the Wenatchee Post Office, said mail is now sorted into three pricing tiers by shape--letters, large envelopes (flats) and packages (parcels).
The new regulations come with new definitions. If an item weighs more than 3.5 ounces or is larger than 11.5 x 6.125 inches or is more than a quarter-inch thick, it is considered a flat.
