STATE APPROVES SDG&E CONTRACT FOR WIND POWER.

San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) has announced that the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) has approved its request to purchase 205.5 megawatts of electricity from enXco, a wind energy firm.

"The approval of this contract moves SDG&E closer to its goal of fulfilling 20 percent of its customers' energy needs from renewable resources by 2010," said Terry Farrelly, vice president of electric and gas procurement for SDG&E. The contract will contribute approximately 3.5 percent toward meeting that goal.

While a megawatt is enough to power 650 homes, wind energy output varies because it is an intermittent resource.
